East Kilbride Housing Association

 Non-Domestic Project

The East Kilbride & District Housing Association Offices project involved the sensitive conversion of a traditional Victorian house into modern office accommodation, complemented by a contemporary single-storey extension. The brief sought to retain the character and presence of the original building while providing efficient, open-plan workspaces capable of supporting the Housing Association's growing operational requirements.

The existing building underwent a comprehensive internal refurbishment, carefully adapting the historic fabric to accommodate modern office facilities while preserving its architectural character. To provide the additional accommodation required, a new extension was positioned to the gable of the property, following the site boundary to maximise the available footprint. Its distinctive triangular form was developed in direct response to the site's constraints, allowing the accommodation to be increased without compromising the relationship with neighbouring properties or external spaces.

Designed as a contemporary addition, the extension clearly distinguishes itself from the Victorian building while remaining respectful of its scale and proportions. A combination of natural slate cladding, extensive glazing and a large glazed roof introduces generous levels of natural daylight into the open-plan administration area, creating bright, comfortable working environments and reducing the reliance on artificial lighting. The contrast between the traditional architecture of the original house and the clean, contemporary detailing of the extension creates a balanced composition that celebrates both old and new.

The completed project successfully revitalises a historic building, providing flexible and energy-efficient office accommodation while preserving the architectural character of the original Victorian property. The result is a carefully considered blend of restoration and contemporary design that meets the client's operational needs while enhancing the overall quality of the site.
