Hillside Farm
Private House Hillside Farm is a contemporary replacement farmhouse set within the rolling landscape of Upper Clyde, designed to respond to its rural setting while providing a modern family home tailored to the client's lifestyle. The site enjoys expansive views across the surrounding countryside, and the design was carefully developed to embrace these views while maintaining the familiar scale and character of a traditional Scottish farmhouse.
The architectural response is based on a series of simple, traditional forms arranged to create a sheltered courtyard, providing both privacy and protection from the exposed rural environment. From the entrance, the house presents a modest farmhouse appearance, while the accommodation gradually opens towards the south and east to maximise natural light and panoramic views. Taking advantage of the site's changing levels, the design incorporates a split-level arrangement, with a feature staircase leading to a formal lounge and study positioned to overlook the surrounding hills. A prominent glazed gable forms the focal point of these spaces, framing uninterrupted views across the Upper Clyde landscape and strengthening the connection between the home and its setting.
The external material palette reflects the character of traditional rural buildings, with natural slate roofing, carefully detailed wall finishes and a restrained architectural language that allows the building to sit comfortably within the landscape. Photovoltaic panels are discreetly integrated into the roof, combining contemporary sustainable technologies with traditional farmhouse proportions. The result is a modern interpretation of a Scottish farmhouse that successfully balances rural character with contemporary family living, creating a home that is both timeless in appearance and designed to make the most of its exceptional setting.
