Overton Road, Cambuslang
Social Housing ProjectThe Overton Road development is a high-density residential scheme in Cambuslang, transforming a brownfield site into a contemporary neighbourhood comprising 22 apartments and five terraced townhouses. The development was carefully planned to maximise the site's potential while creating a strong sense of place, delivering high-quality affordable housing that responds sensitively to its surrounding urban context.
The masterplan divides the development across two distinct parcels of land, with a three and four-storey apartment building positioned on one side of the street and a terrace of two-storey townhouses opposite. The apartment block has been carefully articulated with stepped rooflines and changes in height, reflecting the scale of neighbouring properties and creating a confident architectural presence at the end of the street. The townhouses are distinguished by projecting first-floor volumes clad in timber and supported on slender steel columns, creating sheltered parking beneath while giving the terrace a distinctive contemporary identity.
Orientation played a fundamental role in the design of the development. The apartments are arranged on a north-south axis, with through-living accommodation facing east and west to maximise natural daylight and solar gain throughout the day. The townhouses are positioned on an east-west axis, allowing the principal living spaces and bedrooms to benefit from a southerly aspect, while ancillary accommodation is located to the north. Extensive glazing to the southern elevations further enhances daylight, energy efficiency and the relationship between the homes and their external spaces.
A contemporary palette of robust materials, including brick, timber cladding and steel detailing, creates a distinctive yet durable architectural character appropriate for its urban setting. The result is a carefully considered residential development that balances density with quality, delivering sustainable, light-filled homes that contribute positively to the regeneration of the site while establishing a strong and cohesive streetscape.
