Farmhouse, North Ayrshire
Special Needs Housing ProjectThe design of the Farmhouse presented a significant challenge: creating a fully accessible home while responding sensitively to the site's sloping topography. The proposal was carefully developed to meet the client's accommodation and accessibility requirements without compromising the character of the existing farmhouse or its exceptional setting.
The extension draws inspiration from the traditional vernacular form of the original farmhouse, reinterpreting it through a contemporary architectural language. A new front elevation establishes a strong yet sympathetic relationship with the existing building, while expansive frameless corner glazing has been carefully positioned to frame uninterrupted panoramic views across the surrounding landscape. A generous raised deck extends the full length of the elevation, providing level access between the principal living spaces and the external environment, seamlessly connecting the home with its setting.
The elevated deck creates the impression of the extension floating above the landscape, an effect reinforced by a carefully integrated raised timber planter beneath, adding depth, softness and elegance to the composition. A key design concept was to preserve and celebrate the existing farmhouse, with its original stone front elevation becoming an internal feature wall within the new living spaces. This approach allows the history of the building to remain visible and appreciated while introducing a modern layer of architecture around it.
The material palette was selected to complement the original farmhouse while expressing the extension as a contemporary intervention. Smooth Stanton Moor stone provides a refined interpretation of the existing masonry, while a VM Zinc roof reflects the tone and texture of the traditional slate roof. Together, these materials create a harmonious balance between old and new, allowing the extension to sit confidently within its rural setting while enhancing the overall character of the site.
